Best Online Business Tips
Best Online Business Tips
I’m sharing this blog post with you (along with my website stats!) because keeping things honest is one of the most important principles in my small business. Too often we see content that promotes fast sales, overnight success and hustle culture in an effort to grow as quickly as possible.
And there are a few problems with that.
It’s not methodical.
In my experience (and all my entrepreneurial friends would agree) the best approach is slow and steady. I struggle with patience myself but I’ve learnt that taking your time leads to a higher success rate. Online businesses very rarely succeed quickly. In fact, it’s common knowledge that successful online businesses are not for the faint of heart. They require constant and relentless research, adaptability and marketing – largely because online marketplaces, search engine optimization and the customer base is always changing.
You think clearer so you notice mistakes or flaws sooner and can correct them sooner. Think slow but fail fast. Do one thing at a time, pay attention and pivot if it doesn’t work. You’re also more open to opinions and suggestions towards something that might be better for you and your business.
It’s not sustainable.
Burn out is a real thing when you’re an entrepreneur. Between marketing, branding, website updates and SEO, social media, outreach, collaborations, in-person obligations, budgeting etc., trying to rush through or do any of these things quickly leads to overstimulation, imposter syndrome and fatigue.
It’s hard to evaluate
If you’re speeding through, trying to produce many things at the same time, making changes too often and not creating systems along the way to track and monitor those changes you’ll never actually be in a position to analyze what works and what doesn’t.
Some of the best advice I have ever received was from my soulmate bestie and entrepreneurial powerhouse, Olivia Ribas of Primavera Kitchen.
She told me to always do one thing at a time – in order to have a clear vision of your efforts and results. Do your due diligence before diving in, folks!
Back to stats! Why am I sharing my last 30 days’ website stats with you?
Because it’s what a business looks like. My growth is slow but it’s consistent and for a website that has been active for less than six months it does quite well. There are dips and there are spikes and then little plateaus that I analyze and learn from. I’ve been very busy with clients the last two months and eased off off-site SEO and backlinks. I’ve also noticed that when I write blog posts a few times a week, my organic traffic goes up and then as I ease up a little on writing new content, my traffic drops a bit.
And that’s ok.
What matters is that I take the time to understand and make sense of my stats – and I know my patterns and controls.
Take the time to do the same for your own website.
60 Day Business Challenge
I challenge you to create a 60 day plan, writing down everything you do related to your website each day and the corresponding traffic change. Just write it all down. Posts, stories, reels, pins, posts, page updates, new artwork, collections, email marketing newsletters, online courses you might take, online store changes, email subscribers, website design changes, new blog posts…
After 60 days, create a little chart or spreadsheet and start analyzing. Not only will you have a reference sheet for your business but you’ll have learnt to how to pace yourself and slow down through it all.
