In simplest terms, certificates of authenticity are documents that authenticate a piece of artwork. As an artist, I sign and guarantee that the purchased art is of high quality. When you buy artwork and receive the Certificate of Authenticity (COA) with it, you can confidently know that the art you’ve invested in is an original, not a fake, created by the artist. Therefore, think of it as an official guarantee or serial number that confirms its authenticity, origin, and specifications.

Artists typically issue certificates of authenticity, but they may also come from a gallery or an authorized representative when an artwork is sold or transferred. Certificates of authenticity apply to both original works and print reproductions, so those would include an edition number if they are limited editions or set numbers of reproduction prints.

These documents may also be called an Authentication Certificate, Proof of Authenticity, Artwork Certificate, Certificate of Origin, Art Authentication Document, or Artist’s Certificate.

What To Include On Your Art Certificate Of Authenticity?

Here’s the important information you should include when you create your certificate of authenticity. Additionally, we’ve also included a number of these on the free certificate template, so that your work is really just adding in your business info and clicking print!

  • Artist Name
  • Title of Work
  • Date of Completion
  • Medium
  • A brief statement written by the artist that states the authenticity of the work and relevant copyrights.
  • Original or a print?
  • Signature and date

Also, optional information you can add:

  • Dimensions
  • Contact info (If not elsewhere already)
  • How to care for the artwork (I actually attach a separate card that includes care instructions, but some artists like to include it on the certificate).
  • Photo of Artwork

*** Be sure to hand sign your certificates. Please, don’t mass print certificates with it already signed. Hand signing is what makes it personal, authentic and one of a kind. It’s like signing a contract. So, while a printed signature would hold up, hand signing gives the client assurance that the art came from you.

Why Should You Provide An Artwork Certificate of Authenticity?

In other words, the certificate serves as a legal and historical record for appraisal, insurance and future resale. By providing one, you give your client a type of receipt they can use later as an official document verifying the artwork’s origin. Professional artists almost always provide a certificate of authenticity with original paintings or limited edition prints therefore take the time to create one customized to your brand.

How To Print Your Artwork Certificate of Authenticity

Using our template? Or, maybe you’ve created your own template and want to print them out at home. If so, here’s a few extra tips for printing, personalizing and ‘bossing‘ things up.

Small art prints I print at home in my studio. As such, I use the Epson Surecolour P700 to print all my prints and pair it with a 100% cotton rag paper or velvet fine art paper from Epson. Similar to watercolour paper in that it is 100% cotton and acid-free, fine art print paper is very specific in its characteristics. I print my certificates on the same paper.

If you want to take your certificate a step further you can use gold embossing stickers and get a custom embossing stamp made. I personally have a custom ink stamp that I use instead of the sticker. Visually, it just adds a really hand-made and finished touch.
